This role provides strategic leadership for the university’s digital marketing and communications, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and brand standards. It oversees all digital platforms, including social media, websites, and multimedia production, to drive engagement, visibility, and user experience. The position also manages a multidisciplinary team, ensures policy compliance, and leverages analytics to inform continuous improvement and innovation.

This role leads the development and optimisation of Rhodes University's digital and multimedia platforms to enhance user experience, support strategic communication goals, and drive digital transformation aligned with institutional priorities. It encompasses managing web performance, social media, digital campaigns, multimedia production, and analytics, while ensuring brand consistency, policy compliance, and stakeholder engagement across campus. The position also involves supervising a diverse creative team, overseeing resource allocation and project delivery, and maintaining a comprehensive digital asset system to support effective communication and marketing initiatives.

I served as the School of Journalism & Media Studies’ full-stack web and multimedia lead, designed, developed and secured more than 200 TerminalFour and custom sites (including Highway Africa and WMEMC platforms), administered servers, databases, SSL, analytics, streaming, digital signage and video-conferencing systems, scoped and managed projects and budgets, coordinated with central IT and Communications, mentored staff and students, supervised contractors, and continually assessed emerging technologies to keep the School’s digital ecosystem robust, compliant and innovative.

I managed enterprise SharePoint and virtualized infrastructure—continually auditing server health, usage trends, permissions, patches, backups, security, network load balancing and cost optimisation across Azure, Hyper-V and VMware—while supervising developers and contractors to deliver large-scale IT, web and mobile projects (including intranet sites, hosted PABX, video-conferencing systems and web apps), enforcing governance, documentation standards, and budgets to satisfy stakeholders.

I maintained and documented existing systems, gathered user requirements to design, develop, test and implement new full-stack and SharePoint applications, performed performance tuning, supported users end-to-end, and supervised junior developers throughout the development lifecycle.

I installed and configured computer hardware, operating systems, and applications; monitored and maintained systems and networks; diagnosed and resolved hardware and software faults, replacing parts as needed; produced support documentation and reports; followed technical diagrams to repair or set up systems; supported new application roll-outs; created user accounts and handled password issues; met SLA response times for call-outs, managed multiple concurrent cases, and continuously tested and evaluated emerging technologies.
